How to Look Natural in Your Wedding Photos
Tips for looking natural, not stiff, on your wedding day
One thing I hear all the time is – “We’re really awkward in photos.”
In reality, almost everyone says that.
The good news? You don’t need to know how to pose, stand, or smile perfectly. Natural wedding photos mostly come from relaxing, enjoying the day, and forgetting I’m even there with a camera.
Here are a few things that really help:

Focus on each other, not me
The best shots happen when you’re paying attention to each other instead of the camera.
Whisper a silly joke, laugh, hold hands, or just wander together for a few minutes. Those small moments are what make your photos feel like you. Half the time, I’ll just quietly step back and let it happen.
Movement beats posing every time
Standing still and thinking about what to do with your hands is the fastest way to feel awkward.
Walking together, turning towards each other, or just exploring a little, especially somewhere beautiful in the Devon countryside, works so much better. Movement makes everything feel relaxed and alive.

Don’t stress about getting it right
You’re not expected to know what to do. That’s my job.
I’ll give gentle prompts when needed, nothing stiff or posed. Think less formal photoshoot and more a quiet ten minutes together while I happen to be nearby with a camera.
The first few minutes always feel odd
This is normal. You’ll notice the camera, wonder what to do with your hands, and probably feel a bit awkward. A few minutes later, you’re chatting, laughing, and forgetting I’m even there. That is when the good photos start appearing.

Your wedding day actually helps
You’re surrounded by people you love, emotions are running high, and there is so much going on.
Laughs during speeches, hugs with family, friends messing about on the dance floor. These moments look amazing because they are amazing.
A quick escape works wonders
Most couples love a short break during the couple portraits. Ten or fifteen minutes away from the crowd, a little wander, a breather, maybe even a beautiful view if we are lucky. It is often the calmest part of the day and where some of the best photos happen.

The good news
You don’t need to be confident in front of a camera to get great photos. Relax, enjoy the day, focus on each other, and I will take care of the rest. And if you are still convinced you are awkward in photos, don’t worry. I hear that at nearly every wedding and it is never actually true.
